Lambs

Both, the Scotties as well as the Portland ewes have no problems at all with giving birth. Even when the lambs are in breech presentation, the ewes will do the job. If the mothers are weak or too fat, you will have difficulties with lambing. Feeding is very important: what you feed and how much! When the breeding season starts, I like to have my ewes in perfect condition. From February on, intend to ration my food and add some vitamins and minerals to the menu.
The ram lambs are born with small, soft horns that can have the thickness of a thumb. The horns of the ewe lambs come later.
Lambs of the Scottish Blackface are born bright white, with a black head and black markings on the legs. Portland lambs are born with a foxy red colour. There is a big difference between the two; Scottie lambs follow their mother almost immediately and are very active, the portland lambs are more at ease. It is very difficult to find a Portland lamb in a field when it is sleeping, they almost disappear in the background with their colour.
